Disaster Response

2018 Hurricane Disaster Response

Many of the states and people being affected by Hurricane Michael and Hurricane Florence are situated within the boundaries of three of our sister districts: The Southeastern District, The Florida-Georgia District, and The Southern District, all of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. These three districts, as well as LCMS World Relief, are all involved in collecting funds to support the tremendous needs of this ongoing relief effort.

The LCMS Southeastern District is coordinating efforts for disaster relief to assist those affected by Hurricane Florence. You can go to the following link to get updates, volunteer, or learn how you can support the relief efforts. Click here for more info. The Southeastern District (hardest hit by Hurricane Florence and still recovering) has posted a donate now button.

The Florida-Georgia has also posted a link to donate funds to its relief effort. Access that opportunity by clicking here.

The Southern District (of which the Florida panhandle is a part) has made available an online giving opportunity. To donate, click here and then designate "Disaster Relief."

LCMS Disaster Relief is working with the presidents and disaster response coordinators of the above districts to evaluate the current situation and to plan a coordinated LCMS response. Hurricane relief donations to LCMS Disaster Relief can be made here.

The Michigan District LERT leaders are also asking congregations/schools in the Michigan District to consider assembling Flood Buckets and Hygiene Kits (PDF format). This PDF explains more about the buckets/kits and how you can support our efforts in the coming months. Please continue to keep all those affected by this most recent hurricane in your prayers.

All of the funds received by any of the above entities will be used only for disaster response.

Become a Trained Christian Volunteer

A disaster may happen anywhere at any time. Are you prepared to respond? Join us at the Lutheran Early Response Team (LERT) volunteer training program provided by the LCMS Office of National Mission. This 6-hour program will help you serve as a trained Christian volunteer, focusing on the most important things to remember as you prepare for–or respond to–a disaster in your community or beyond.

An unparalleled opportunity stands before us to share Christ by offering Christian care in times of disaster. Christ's mercy is at the center of LERT training and is the basis for everything we do.

Attend Training
